girl on film: #mff2 or 2010 milwaukee film festival preview

Okay, beloved readers, after a couple of weeks of grinding through the program, creating diverse algorithms and spreadsheets, turning down social invites and binge sleeping to store up for my 11 Day Cinematic Christmas/Hanukkah Combo, I've finally created my schedule for the 2010 Milwaukee Film Festival* (*subject to change based on how much sleep I've actually gotten)

All shows that I'm attending are at the Oriental, although there's a great variety at the Marcus North Shore and Marcus Ridge Cinemas, which are awesome places if you have a car. (And guess what kiddos, if you elect Scott Walker governor in November, you're NEVER EVER EVER getting to those places on public transportation. EVER. In fact, you probably won't even be able to get to the Oriental.)

Thursday, September 23
7P: Blue Valentine
9P: MFF Opening Night Party @ Discovery World

I'm very excited for this whole evening because I've worked Opening Night for the last several festivals and always showed up late to the ball, starving, and scraping up crumbles of cheese. Need to find a fabulous outfit in the recesses of my closet and get my party on. Also, the film itself is getting loads of awards buzz, so I'm ready to kick off 11 days of viewing with a good one.

Friday, September 24
3:30P: 3 Idiots
9:45P: Winnebago Man (maybe - because my dad is making a rare appearance in Milwaukee)
Midnight: The Revenant

Bollywood Comedy, Business Man turned Viral Video Celeb, Buddy-movie zombie flick.

Because of all that's going on, I have a single ticket to the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra's interpretation of Beethoven's 9th tonight that I need to sell. I paid $25, but will take best offer. I wish I could go because Beethoven and I bonded whilst I was in Bonn (bonn-ded?). I visited his birthplace, cried in his digital library (piano sonatas get me in the heartstrings), and may or may not have a small scar on my right elbow from the cobblestones underneath his statue in the Münsterplatz.

Saturday, September 25
3:30P: Let's Get Animated
5:15P: Breathless
7:45P: Rasmalai Dreams

Let's start here in reminding you all that I bust my arse volunteering as a Theatre Manager during the festival so that I can see all these great films. You too should volunteer! Maybe not as insanely as yours truly, but do it, it's fun! So my first shift is today also, from 10:15 PM to 2:30 AM. If you're going to the midnight show, shoot a wink and a smile to your friendly Theatre Manager.

The movies I'm seeing? Fun shorts, French restoration, Funky locally-made genre-bending insanity.

Sunday, September 26
12:30P: Enemies of the People
2:00P: Waiting for 'Superman'
4:45P: Monica & David
6:15P: Gerrymandering

A day of documentaries for this gal. I really want to see Monica & David, so I'll probably skip the talkback after Superman although if you have a stake or interest in education, definitely check that out. I'll also be working from 8:15P until close, so if you're coming to the awesome looking It's Kind of a Funny Story, say hello.

Monday, September 27
5:15P: Nora's Will

Catching a Mexican feature after work and I am then working from 7P-close this evening and will be completely avoiding the small screen drama of the Packers versus that Favre scoundrel.

Tuesday, September 28
7:15P: Soundtrack for a Revolution
9:45P: Perrier's Bounty

In a perfect world, I'd be in orchestra seating with my rich, classy, handsome, intelligentsia soulmate to see the restored Metropolis accompanied by the Alloy Orchestra. Because honestly, this event sounds AMAZING. But in my penny-pinching efforts, I can't spend the extra cash to go and also feel obliged to go to the FUEL Milwaukee/Milwaukee Film joint event that night. Soundtrack to a Revolution looks interesting, but why they think young professionals prefer John Legend and Joss Stone to 1920s German sociopolitical silent films, well...hmm, I guess again I'm not like the "others." However, if YOU have $15-$50 to spare and have never seen Metropolis, GO TO THIS SCREENING. And if your schedule doesn't permit, gets your hands on a copy of Metropolis cuz it's awesome and you'll feel smarter afterward.

Wednesday, September 29
There's another screening of Metropolis tonight, but I'll be engaging in another Deutschy activity and seeing Cabaret at the Milwaukee Rep. I have several friends involved in the Entourage planning and I will try not to hold it against them that they planned this season's debut right smack in the middle of Film Fest season.

Thursday, September 30
7:15P: Mark My Words
9:15P: Ride, Rise, Roar

After seeing Howl at the UWM Union Theatre recently, I feel that it would be fitting to swing over to Great Lakes Distillery before film festing tonight to support the Banned: Taboo Books, Bites, & Libations event to raise money for public libraries. The good folks over at Burp! Blog are putting it on and it'll be a good way to fill up before a night of film appreciation. More documentaries on tap for me -- a locally made one on spoken word poets and a concert doc about the always awesome David Byrne.

Friday, October 1
5:15P: My Perestroika
7:00P: A Somewhat Gentle Man
9:15P: The Red Chapel
Midnight: Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil

I took today off to gain some sanity and will be working the afternoon at the Oriental, if you did the same, come say hi. My evening will be spent with two documentaries on Communist regimes, a Norwegian drama, and a horror-comedy...how can you not love the schizophrenia of an 11 day film festival?!

Saturday, October 2
5:00P: The Milwaukee Show
7:00P: Gravity
10:00P: Blood Junkie
Midnight: Best Damn F$#&ing Midnight Shorts Ever. Sh*t.

Working the early afternoon shift, then watching movies until my eyes bleed. Excited to see local talent highlighted, then (hopefully) a German dark comedy (I think that's redundant), more local talent in a homegrown horror flick, and crazyass midnight shorts.

Sunday, October 3
11:00A: About Elly
1:15P: My Way Home

I'm wrapping up my film fest experience in the early hours with an Iranian drama and a locally made Hmong documentary. I don't want to subject myself to Buried later on. Since being buried alive is one of my major freakout points (the only thing worse would be spontaneously human combusting whilst buried alive with a swarm of bees), I don't think I can handle a whole film based on that theme (I could barely deal with the 20 or so minutes in Kill Bill Vol. 2). So I'm working Closing Night instead.

See you at the movies!

art attack: my "mini" summer gallery night

It's hard to believe it's been a quarter of a year since my epic adventures at Spring Gallery Night (photo above depicts the first of what would be many beers). I'm definitely toning it down for summer, have to watch my spending for my impending Europe trip and am running the Sausage 5k early Saturday morning.

There's a ton of awesome shows around town, including one in Bay View and the Urban Ecology Center that I can't make it too, so if you have the time, check them all out.

If you want to stalk/look at art with me, here's a handy dandy map of where I'm going to be (click the markers to find out when, also zoom out for the full view):

View Summer Gallery Night 2010 in a larger map

Again, for those not into interactivity, here's the schedule:

5:30P: Dean Jensen Gallery
5:50P: DeLind Fine Art
6:10P: Pfister Hotel Lobby Gallery
6:45P: Peltz Gallery
7:10P: Caggio Gallery

Thanks as always to the awesome folks at the Art City blog for making Gallery Nighting a decipherable experience.

Oh, and if you don't get enough art on Friday, I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend you make a trip to the Milwaukee Art Museum for the Milwaukee Artist's Marketplace on Saturday from 10-5. This is one of my favorite events of the year, and even though I may not be able to buy more than a $10 painting this year, there ARE $10 paintings and all sorts of awesome stuff by local artists. Worth the trip down.

what i'm looking forward to this week

Summer has officially begun in Milwaukee, so I've taken advantage of three "rest days" at the beginning of the week to get my life and apartment in order before insanity begins.

Thursday
Becky and I's Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Share from Rare Earth Farm starts! Looking forward to hopefully enlightening you all with the return of Monday Munchies detailing what I do with my bounty.

After picking up said veggies, it'll be my first trip down to Alterra on the Lake's Musica del Lago series. We have a solid group going for De La Buena. Hopefully the weather will be lovely.

Friday

I will be celebrating a dear friend's birthday, but beforehand I hope to swing by Taylor's to celebrate the birthday of UrbanMilwaukee.com. I doubt I'll make it to the screening of Rad at the Bike-In Movie, but you should go if you can!

Saturday
In the spirit of keeping an attitude of gratitude, I will not bemoan the fact that I'm missing 1,000 other events in Milwaukee (including participating in the Great Milwaukee Race with my friends) because I'll be working at the Juneteenth Day Parade & Celebration. Actually, you should pop by and check it out.

Provided I'm not totally exhausted after, I'll be heading over to the The Brenner Beer Tasting at the Parachute Project on 27th & Wells. I went to the first Parachute Project event on Gallery Night and it's definitely worth checking out. I'm a big fan of the "pop up gallery" concept and using abandoned urban spaces for art's sake. Check this one out if you can.

I'll likely end the evening at the Summer Soulstice on North Avenue, another Milwaukee summer tradition.

Sunday
Anyone want to be my brunch buddy on Sunday morning? I have signed up to write a guest blog for the fantastic Milwaukee Brunch Reviews this summer and would like to hit up Buckley's this weekend. Afterward, I plan to hit the Lakefront Festival of the Arts, swing into see the AIDS Quilt at the Milwaukee Art Musuem, and probably pop over to Polish Fest.

***
How can you be bored in this town? What are your plans for the weekend?

How to Survive 75 Miles, Or the Miller Lite Ride 2010

Cross-posted from Daily Mile/Facebook/Twitter:

My body hates me right now. I can't post much as I am possibly going to keel over at any moment. But I have to just give a huge THANK YOU to everyone who donated money to my ride (over $1500 raised) or even just gave me encouragement in person, on Twitter or on Facebook. My friends and family totally rule. Honestly, there were some re...ally hard moments today. This is the longest I've ever cycled in my LIFE. But the thought of all the people that believed in me kept me focused and motivated. I have to thank add a special shout out to the #fitmke crew without whom there's NO WAY I could've done this. Without you guys I would not be MUCH lighter than last year, when 50 miles was the maximum I could push. I would not be in the best physical shape of my life without having connected with all of you. I have to thank my FUEL Milwaukee team this year: Maggie, Randy, Robin, Gary, Jeff & Lynn. And especially the latter two who waited at the finish line to cheer me on as I crossed. I may feel beat physically, but I'm just so grateful for the support and encouragement I want to give the world a hug. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

It took five and half hours.

Also, with running mixed in, my Daily Mile summary for the week is 89 MILES. You don't even know how incredible this is for me. I don't think I've ever done anything that physical in my LIFE.

Training for the Arts

As I mentioned in this post, I'm really taking training seriously this year. I want to kick 75 miles in the butt. I appreciate the donations thus far (Tuesdays are going to be my "thank you" days, so stay tuned folks) because they literally got me out of bed this morning.

As I posted on Daily Mile, I did NOT want to get up at 5:30 AM to go to the gym. But spin class is on the calendar as a necessary activity for this endeavor. So I went. It was really difficult, but I went. And it was great. And got me through my day. So thanks everyone for keeping me motivated.

Tomorrow my "training" activity is the e Rock N' Run in Tosa, which actually has proceeds going to UPAF, so two birds, one stone.

Of course, you can always donate online here.

Bikes & The Arts

Here's a really great example of biking and the arts coming together to create, what I think, is a really lovely and inspirational video. Enjoy!

See, the Miller Lite Ride for the Arts really can affect more than just one day of me being sore!

Also, don't forget, you can support my efforts online here.

art attack: spring gallery night

This Friday is one of my favorite nights of the year -- SPRING GALLERY NIGHT!

I don't just support the performing arts in Milwaukee, but the visual arts as well.

It's looking like it should be relatively warm too, so what better to do than put on some stunning spring fashion and wander aimlessly looking at amazing local art?

I spent part of my weekend and evening last night perusing art listings and made a killer interactive map for you all to track me on Friday night and meet up. Lots of wonderful events going on throughout the city, so feel free to meet up at any point.

If you click on any marker on the map you'll get the details on that stop and what time my entourage (or just me) should be there.

Speaking of transportation, no appeal from me would be complete without reminding you to PLEASE call your legislators in Madison and tell them to GET MOVING and get the RTA legislation passed before the session ends on April 22. To find your reps go to: http://www.legis.wisconsin.gov/w3asp/waml/waml.aspx. Please call and/or email BOTH your rep and your senator to tell them you support the RTA and dedicated funding for transit in Milwaukee.

AAAAAAAAAND, to bring it all back to art...if this bill actually passes and transit in Milwaukee is saved I have vowed to get the new RTA logo tattooed on my body.

So please come join me for art, fashion, cocktails, biking, transit talk and awesomeness this FRIDAY NIGHT!

video: why i ride

I had the opportunity to meet with the folks at the United Performing Arts Fund the other day and they created this little clip to tell the world "Why I Ride" in the Miller Lite Ride for the Arts.

it's that time of year...

You may notice the "new look" of the Accidental Wisconsinite. You may also notice that I have a new blog up. :)

I actually intend to do quite a bit of blogging over the next couple of months, because it's that time of year again...time for me to launch my annual fundraising campaign for the Miller Lite Ride for the Arts.

This year I'm going ALL OUT. Because of my recent fitness success, I'm pushing myself to the max and taking on the 75 mile route. Keeping with my $20/mile tactic, that raises my fundraising goal to $1500.

I am committing to blogging about my ride training and my ride motivation (performing arts) at least three times a week between now and June 6. Attending two fantastic performances at the Milwaukee Rep and the Milwaukee Ballet in the past week reaffirmed my dedication to this important cause.

Also, please mark your calendars for the evening of Friday, May 7. I've arranged with the fine folks over at AJ Bombers to guest bartend that night to support the ride. Come enjoy a delicious burger and let me serve ya up something to wash it down with!

time out thursday: i can't take a break

I had one free weekend in October. My first entirely free weekend since May. So what do I do? Sign up for a women's leadership conference of course! Signed up around the same time as Weight Watchers in a total grasping for something before I turn 30. It should be an interesting weekend though and help me become more active and engaged in my community.

Tonight though, I'm heading to the Milwaukee Ballet for the premiere of Cindrella. As part of my UPAF fund raising, I was able to pick one arts group to get "season" tickets for (I'm not technically a "season ticket holder" -- just vouchers -- hence the quotes). I have season tickets for the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra's Classical Connections series and regularly attend the Milwaukee Rep's Entourage events, so I thought I'd try something new and different. At the time The Skylight kerfuffle was going on, so the ballet won out. I do need to get to The Skylight and The Florentine sometime this season, so let me know, dear readers, if you ever want to go.

Finally, on Sunday, Becky and I will make the annual pilgrimage to Elegant Farmer for a little late-season apple picking. Have to build up my stores before the markets end for the season.

milwaukee props: Great Milwaukee Weekend on Tap!

I know it's only Tuesday, but with my blogging record lately I thought I'd get this out now. This is a JAM-PACKED weekend coming up and I wanted to highlight some of it in this space.

Thursday! Young Nonprofit Professionals-Greater Milwaukee Chapter (of which I am Marketing Co-Chair), is hosting a screening of the documentary PROMISE OF AMERICA. The event is in Kadish Park (900 block of E North Ave) from 7:00-9:45 PM. More info here: http://ynpn-milwaukee.org/

Friday! It's Gallery Night folks. I'll be hitting up some spots in the downtown/3W area (let me know if you wanna join) before heading to Turner Hall for the hottest show of the summer - The Kings Go Forth CD release party. This is a guaranteed good time. Only $10 too! Come get your groove on. http://turnerhallballroom.org/kingsgoforth Oh and if you come to the show you get a commemorative Summer of Meghan souvenir.

Saturday! One of my favorite events of the summer, the Milwaukee Artists Marketplace, is from 10-5 today. I'll probably head over around noon (following my requisite East Town Farmer's Market visit). A great opportunity to pick up local art for really reasonable prices. http://www.mam.org/calendar/events/index.php?com=detail&eID=868&year=2009&month=07. Afterward I'll stop over by the Brady Street Cheese Fest, then home.

I know there's a lot more going on, but I do have some housekeeping that needs to get done, including an extra special surprise that I'll reveal after Sunday.

thankful tuesdays: we did it!

It's a day late, but thank you to the well-over 50 people who donated to my Miller Lite Ride for the Arts campaign. Not only did I hit my goal, but I surpassed it by nearly $200 -- raising $1,195 for the United Performing Arts Fund. Thanks everybody for their generous support of the performing arts in Milwaukee!

The ride was a lot of fun, despite the dreary and sometimes downpoury weather. Luckily my pal Laura stuck out the 50 miles with me and it made the 4 rainy hours pass quickly!

girl on film: i'm not a trekkie but...

...I am finding this week very Star Trek focused.

Tomorrow I'm going to the Oriental Theatre for the blockbuster event of the summer. I'm not geeking about it like most people, but going because a big group is and also because I'm a LOST freak and JJ Abrams is behind this flick.

Tonight I was at the Oriental thanks to Milwaukee Film and the Milwaukee Ballet thanking their subscribers/donors with a special screening of William Shatner's Gonzo Ballet. This was a documentary about a ballet interpretation of Shatner's spoken word album Has Been. The awesome part about the whole thing is that the ballet premiered with Milwaukee Ballet in 2007 and boy does Milwaukee come off looking world class. Although the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts is the most recognizable physical landmark, the talent and efforts of lots of Milwaukeeans were evident in the credits -- as the audience cheered almost every time a new name scrolled up on the screen.

The film had appeal across the board for not just ballet lovers, but also pop culture lovers and music fans. My friend Mark and I described it as "completely random," but in a really good way. It's always great to see our city getting national and international attention for its accomplishments.

Even better to see our artistic accomplishments putting us there! Maybe by the time there are people permanently stationed in space, Milwaukee will be remembered for its great contributions to earthly culture.

Shamless plug: You can help keep the arts in business here...donate to my efforts for the Miller Lite Ride for the Arts at www.firstgiving.com/mcarnold.

call to action: UPAF Tweet Up Fundraiser TONIGHT

As some of you know I've been trying to raise funds for UPAF by vowing to ride 50-miles for the Miller Lite Ride for the Arts. I've been playing around with using social media to set a substantial fundraising goal of $1,000, but still need to pump up my efforts in the 6 weeks before the June 7 ride.

Well, my use of social media for fundraising caught the eye of Spreenkler, a local social media agency and they invited me to a TweetUp (meeting of Twitter users) they are hosting tonight for UPAF. I originally was on the fence about going, as I have Creative Council for FUEL Milwaukee tonight where it will be announced that I am 2009-10 Team Lead for the Healthy & Green Team. HOWEVER, @spreenkler just tweeted that all proceeds from tonight's event will go to @mcarnold's fundraising efforts. WAIT A SECOND...HEY THAT'S ME!!!

So, I'm going. I'll be there around 7:45 PM at Fanatics. Requested cover is $10. There's drink specials and karaoke. You should be there. Details are here: http://www.meetup.com/spreenkler/calendar/10177554/

If you can't make it tonight, I hope you consider donating to my fundraising efforts. (Thanks to those who already have!). Even $5 or $10 can make a huge difference. My fundraising page is http://www.firstgiving.com/mcarnold.

See you tonight!

art attack: spring gallery night

What better way to cap off a triumphant arts week than with Spring Gallery Night?

Here's my personal list of galleries for tomorrow night. If you can meet out at any point please do!

Starting on the Eastside/Brewers Hill and ending in Bay View/Walkers Point. I included transit info for those who want to join me on the bus (although if it's really close to 70 degrees, I may be biking it). I opted to surpass the Third Ward this time around (too much to see in the outlying areas and didn't want to get bogged down), but I highly recommend you check that out on Gallery Day.

Here's a map of all the galleries:
